Tara and all, Thanks. I've attempted to resolve with all of these. I spoke with the Sennheiser technical support line and Apple disability support line. Neither had solutions. Apple support said they would submit a problem ticket to their "engineering" section.
Finally, I purchased a Plantronics VOYAGER-5200-UC from Amazon (for a simple return, if needed). It does seem to have a higher volume level and I am keeping the earpiece. After much reflection, I also may need to consider joining the group wishing to present concerns to hearing aid producers.
