I purchased mine from blind mice Mart for $109.

I have two of those talking tape measures in my shop, and neither one works
anymore. Funny how they will only bounce on the concrete floor two or three
times before failing altogether. I like that I might be able to have them
repaired.
Thx, Albert

Talking Tape Measure by Cobalt – horizons for the Blind

You can of course contact Cobalt directly in England, they’ll ship to you as
far as I know and without the 9 Volt battery it costs 52.95 British Pounds
which converts approx. to
$66 to
$68, maybe $70 max. if your credit card charges a bit of a higher exchange rate
On this Horizons for the Blind
Website it’s $105 US and I have a feeling it will cost less than $35 US to ship
it from England.
I actually was planning to get one shipped, I have 1 which doesn’t work any
more and my second one is getting a bit beat up and I believe if you send them
back they’ll fix them up or replace them. Here in Canada the CNIB sells them
and I find it interesting how a governmental agency puts such a huge mark-up on
stuff, they want $169.95 Canadian for it and it actually shows it’s out of
stock and they don’t know when they get more. 52.95 British Pounds converts to
approx. 88 Canadian Dollars so their price is almost double.

Subject: RE: accessible measuring app?

I have been doing woodworking for 20 years and I absolutely agree that a Click
Rule or talking tape measure are absolutely essential if you want to do stuff
with any degree of accuracy.
There is also the Rotomatic (not sure if I spell this correctly), it is
somewhat the same concept as a Click Rule, but I believe instead of pulling out
a threaded rod which then makes a click every sixteenth of an inch the
Rotomatic works by the user turning a stop along a threaded rod and it can give
you accuracy down to a 1/64 of an inch whereas the imperial click rule is
accurate to 1/16 of an inch and the metric click rule is accurate to 1mm which
is better than a sixteenth, but not quite as good a 1/32.
Having said this, 1/16 is adequate in a lot of situations and 1mm is of course
even better.
The Cobalt talking tape measure if set to imperial is also accurate to 1/16 and
if set to metric it is 1mm. I like the fact that you can include the length of
the housing in your measurement if, for example, you want to measure the inside
of a cabinet or drawer, you can also measure something and push a button to add
that measurement to memory, then measure the next item and add it and so on and
in the end push a button to get a total. This can be handy if you do things
like baseboard trim, they usually come in 16 foot length so I could go and
measure several walls and add up each measurement until I get close to 16 feet
and this way I can minimize waste. The Cobalt can also be set to read out in
inches, feet and inches, e.g. 25 inches or 2 feet 1 inches, on the metric side
you can do metres, centimetres or millimeters, e.g. 1 metre and 10 centimetres
can also be read as 110 centimetres or 1,010 millimetres. I assume that Tape
King can maybe do the same, but I don’t know. Max, could you contact me
off-list as I’d love to learn more about Tape King.
I have both a couple of Cobalt tape measures, I have I think 4 imperial click
rules and 1 metric because when I am really working on a larger project I often
will use 2 or 3 at the same time, e.g. if I want to measure how far away from
the edge of a sheet of plywood the rail of my track saw is especially if I am
cutting along the 8 foot length of the plywood, it is much better to have a
click rule on each end than to run around with a single one.
There is absolutely no way an app is going to be accurate enough for any sort
of good woodworking and I highly doubt you would see a single professional and
sighted woodworker use an app like the Measure app over a tape measure even
though they could probably use it with much better precision in terms of lining
up start and end point. The fact is that if you want to do any sort of
woodworking it will be an expensive hobby.
Lastly, don’t forget the usefulness of setup blocks/bars like these:
15 piece setup bar set
This 15-piece set is one of the most complete and best I have found, I also
have a couple of smaller 5 or 6 piece ones which you can get in metric or
imperial and if I know I want to rip a 2 inch strip off something on my table
saw or I want to set the height on my router bit to half an inch than using the
appropriate setup bar is way easier than trying to set the table saw fence with
the click rule.

Sieghard

The below came from the Vision Aware site of AFB.
The Click Rule

The Click Rule is a metal tubular device slightly longer than 7 1/2 inches. A
7-inch threaded rod is inserted into the tube. A
knurled locking knob is screwed into the top of the threaded rod through a long
slot that has been machined into the tube.

[closeup of someone using the Click Rule to measure a board]

The Click Rule

As the threaded rod is extended into and out of the tube, a clicking sound can
be heard at 1/16-inch intervals. The threaded rod has
raised threads every 1/2 inch.

The metal tube has two flat rectangular stops or fences mounted on it. One stop
or fence is located precisely at the open end of the
tube and the raised thread rod protrudes through it. The other stop or fence is
positioned exactly six inches along the tube from
the stop at the open end of the tube.

The Click Rule comes with three 12-inch extension rods that screw into the end
of the Click Rule raised thread rod and into each
other, enabling accurate measurements at 1/16-inch intervals, from zero to four
feet. Additional extension rods can enable
measurements beyond four feet.

The Click Rule can be purchased from the National Federation of the Blind
Online
Store<http://secure.nfb.org/ecommerce/asp/default.asp> and from Community
Advocates Inc., P.O. Box 83304, Lincoln, NE 68501-3304;

Max,

I haven't been able to find anywhere I can purchase a click ruler.
I have a 25ft "braille" steel tape, but it only has markings every 6
inches which is not really accurate enough for my work, and I haven't
found any sources for something more accurate.
