Hi, I was having the same issues as well. It took a few times but I was finally able to get the keyboard to show up on the phone, similar to how it does on the Apple TV when you wanna use your phone to enter information into it. I hope that this implementation will be improved in future iOS updates because right now it is a bit of a pain. Just keep trying and you'll hopefully get it working soon. Good luck.
