Starting with iPhone 7, 3d touch was introduced as a way to allow people access to features of an appwithout first opening the app. As Christopher said, it was based on pressure on the screen. With iOS 13, 3D touch is not really necessary and will be phased out. Now, just touching and holding one finger on an app will bring up a menu. Flick up once, and you will find Show Context Menu. Double tap on that and you will have some options. Not all apps have useful context menus, but it is great with the App Store.
