If you’re using Apple Pay, as far as I understand it, there is absolutely no 
reason that you should be prompted for any code. The only time I’ve been 
prompted for a code, it was by my phone, because Face ID had failed, and it 
wanted me to enter my passcode. But that wasn’t from the store. That was my 
phone. Are you sure you were using Apple Pay? Maybe the person at the store 
punch some other thing and so it was looking for something else.
