When sending text messages, if you don't have the recipient(s) in Contacts, separate the telephone numbers or email addresses with a semicolon. I got caught out by this just this past weekend. Every time I typed a telephone number and pressed ENTER (on my Mac) to add that phone number to the addressees list, I got shot over to the message input field, my addressees list contained only one entry--the one I just added, and I was unable to add any more numbers or names. I called a friend who knows this stuff like the back of his hand, and he suggested I try separating the telephone numbers with a semicolon, then adding the names that are already in Contacts. This worked flawlessly. What I don't know is how I would end a list of addressees with a telephone number and not lose all the names I have already selected. I suppose I'll have to experiment and discover.

You don't have to put in any symbols.  They will be separated automatically.
