I have had it happen where I held the button too long and it powered off. But the timing is also important. Fairly quickly press and release the volume up, then press and release the volume down, then hold in the power/side switch for 10 or 12 seconds. Like I said, if you have earphones in, you may hear a faint click. If all else fails, you may need to get sighted help to confirm if it is on and silent or just off.
