Hi Alan,

It is a Voiceover/accessibility feature because if Voiceover is not running the
phone never automatically switches, this feature does not exist for sighted
users because for them it’s super easy to simply tap the speaker button whereas
a blind person has to find it first and if audio was only coming from the
earpiece you have to sort of hold your phone close enough to hear but not so
close that the screen doesn’t react to your touch and all that. I also
sometimes wish this was more consistent.
All in all I still prefer the automatic switching even if from time to time it
happens when you don’t want it to happen.

Subject: Resolved was Where is the setting not to have the iPhone revert to the
speaker when moved away from my ear?

Hello again List,

I found my own answer. It's under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Audio,
Auto select speaker in call. I've now turned this off. I guess I had trouble
finding it because this doesn't seem like an accessibility setting to me since
everyone talks on the phone whether using VoiceOver or not and might want to
tweak whether the call comes through the speaker or not.

Alan

Hi List,

I'm having a devil of a time finding the setting to turn off causing the phone
to send audio through its main speaker when moved away from the ear. When on a
phone call, my phone keeps switching between the main speaker and the ear
speaker even though I'm holding it next to my ear causing me to lose a lot of
the spoken words.

I'm running iOS 13.2 on an iPhone 8.

Thanks in advance for any help.
