Hi Dave, The rep at the Apple store and the rep from the accessibility department told me that speaker on the front of the phone has nothing to do with hearing voice over or music, just for talking on the phone. I don't know why, but I never even thought about listening to the front speaker when playing music, but I will now do it. Janet
