NFC is shorthand for Near Field communications. It is an Apple feature introduced several iOS versions ago - iOS 9.0 I believe. It is the communication protocol that allows the placement of your iPhone physically close to another iPhone or other appropriately equipped device to exchange information such as using your iPhone to make payment at a properly configured cash register (i.e. Apple Pay).
