Hi Simon, The Apple TV sits flat, if you are facing the back the power connector is on the right and the optical out on the left. I think what Kevin meant is that he found an adapter which converted the digital signal to an analogue signal and RCA outputs which is the only way to use an Apple TV if you have an older TV or a receiver/amplifier which has no HDMI or digital inputs of any kind and there are still lots of those out there.
