The MBraille app is used just on the phone screen, no external device needed. If you have your braille display handy, stick with it, as you can do everything from writing text to controlling your device. The app provides an alternative onscreen keyboard for braille input.

If you want all of its features, I think it is around $39.00 which includes the third party keyboard capability. I have not used the braille screen input enough to be able to detail the differences in gestures since I was using MBraille before Apple improved the braille screen input. But, here is the link to the help file where you can read through all of MBraille's features. I really like the "dot commands" which are commands you can do in the stand alone app to then initiate an action in another app, like perfecting a note, then writing in braille on the last line, the period followed by sms and the person's name or phone number, and it launches the messages app with your text ready to just hit the send button.
