As for what happens, it says it sends an email requesting to unsubscribe you from that list. I used it recently, and won't know if it really worked for probably a couple weeks as I didn't get a ton of emails from that list. I've never found a setting for that feature, so I don't know if closing it turned it off, or if it will just take a while, or what.
