Its interesting that in the old days a hard reboot meant to completely turn off the device, wait for about 30 seconds and then turn it back on.

A soft reboot, control+alt+delete meant that it would shut down for a few seconds and immediately turn itself back on.

Subject: Re: What is the difference between an iPhone hard reboot and powering on and off?

Hi alan,

This is the only option when the device is frozen and can't be powered down in the normal manner. I believe it resets more options than a simple restart as well, but I don't know the details.

Best,

Anna

Hi List,

Many times over my years on this list I've seen instructions to posters about doing a hard reboot of their iPhones to correct an issue. By hard reboot, I mean pressing volume up once, volume down once, and holding in the power button for a number of seconds until the reboot begins. At least that is the reboot process for my iPhone 8. It used to be different for older iPhones.

I've never understood how a hard reboot differs from simply powering off and on the iPhone and I'm hoping someone on this list can provide an explanation.

Thanks in advance.
