Hi Richard, Press the digital crown to get out of the app you are in. I don't think this closes it completely; it's like pressing Home on an iPhone. To close the current app completely, press the side button until the Power Off screen appears. Then hold down the digital crown until you are returned to the main screen. You shouldn't have to do this often, but if the app is frozen, this should take care of it.
