Along with using extra battery, it is supposed to wake up your phone when you pick it up. But, if it is in a bag/purse, that motion can cause it to constantly wake up, thus using extra battery. If one did not use a passcode or face ID, it would be the same as pressing the home button, or the slide gesture on phones without a home button.
