Mike,
if you are on iOS 13.3, try a one finger triple tap, then find the save
button.
Then, go to the photos app, it should be the most recent photo.
Double tap it, and find the share options.
What I would do is email it to yourself with the subject Hardware or
something.
Then you will have it easily available to show someone.

problem. I did figure out how to send the picture, but I want to save the
picture without saving the text message. This picture is of closet door
rolling hardware and I want to be able to have it on my iPhone so when we go
to hardware stores I can show them what we're looking for instead of trying
to explain it to someone. This hardware is right around 50 years old and is
hard to find, so having it available when we're out & about is important.

Now that you've saved the picture, find it in Photos. It should be the
most recent photo, so it should be easy to find. Find the Share button, and
then use the option you need to send it by email or text to the person you

1. Open Messages, & swipe to the right to highlight the message. Make
sure, Actions, is selected from the Rotor. Double tap on, Actions, & swipe
to the right.
2. Swipe until Voiceover reads the message, then swipe 1 more time, &
Voiceover will read a minimal description of the picture attached.
3. Now, swipe down to, Save, & double tap. The picture is saved
automatically to the Photos App / folder in the, Albums tab.
