Carolyn, if you are talking about text messages in iMessages, you open the
conversation.
Near the bottom of the screen, find the camera button, then flick right passed
the apps button and there is an edit box.
Double tap so it says editing, and type or dictate your message, flick right
once to send and double tap.
There is no reply button.
You are just continuing the conversation.

I was wrong about where the 'send' button is. It is just below the
message you have just entered.
Also, if you have opened an attachment, like a video, you need to go
back to the main message to write and send your text.
