Hi. It really depends on the tasks that you want to accomplish. If you're just taking notes, checking email, web browsing, etc, I'd just go with an iPad paired with a bluetooth keyboard for speed typing.
If however, you're doing more advanced word processing, spreadsheets, etc, I'd go with a smaller laptop. These tasks can be more time wasting than productive on an iPad in my opinion. I'm in college now, and for some classes I'll just take my iPad for note taking and email. However, when I'm going to my accounting class for example, I'll take my MacBook Air so I can use Excel in virtual Windows. Hope this helps you make you're decision. Matthew Campbell.
