I think it is transferring via airplay. It’s just quicker to do it with handoff, if handoff is working well for you. Of course, I could be wrong. But I don’t see how else it would be transferring, even if it uses NFC which I don’t know. Isn’t it still using airplay? It certainly uses Wi-Fi. You can’t do it unless your HomePod and your phone on the same Wi-Fi network. It will not transfer if you’re using cellular.
