I am getting news notifications just as I would expect from an iOS app. Now I am not a Google News for iOS expert but one thing that seems to be crucial to using the app, in terms of using all of its features was to sign into my Google account from within the app. While it is not necessary to sign into one’s Google account in order to read articles, I think the notification feature only works when a Google account is active. Just a guess.
