The only way I have found is to close the thread, flick up to expand thread, double tap and then each message is on its own in the thread so you can delete them individually.
Frankly, I'm probably turning threading off again since 1. You cannot delete individual messages in the thread, and 2. It still seems to jump beyond the first message in the thread.
