So, I have a choice: I can wait for a paper check and hope I can find an
open bank branch in town to deposit it, or I can fill out the form and get
an electronic deposit. Kind of a no brainer.

Everyone making less than $99,000 will get a check. If you've filed taxes &
get your refund via direct deposit, you will get your check that way. If
you have not filed taxes or have filed & do not use direct deposit, you'll
still get a check but it could take months as you will get it in the regular
mail. If you want to speed up the process, you can go to irs.gov & fill out
a form as a non filer. You will be asked to provide bank info so they can
send your check via direct deposit.

It's a bit confusing though because, if I understand what I read on the IRS
site correctly, SSDI recipients will get their payments automatically. But
if you don't get enough income to have to file a tax return, you have to
fill out the form on the site to get the payment.
So if I'm not mistaken, even if you get SSDI, if you don't get enough to be
required to file a tax return, you have to fill out the form on the site to
get the payment.
If anybody understands it differently, I'd be interested.
