I have both a 40 cell display and a 20 cell display. I've found that when reading I preferred the 20 cell as it meant I could read the book faster using 20 cells. Also, when taking notes, 20 cells was all I needed to help me remember where I am in the notepad and to do quick review of what I have written. The 40 cells is useful for editing long documents but if you only have a 20 or an 18, you'll manage just fine. I personally don't think that anything less then a 18 cell would be useful as you'd not be able to put many words on a line. This is just my opinion.
