I haven’t followed this too closely so forgive me if this has been suggested, but I used to use a metronome for this purpose. Just set it to 60 beats. There used to be several accessible ones on the app store, but haven’t looked recently. It worked perfectly though.

If you call 303-499-7111, that is the National Bureau of Standards clock, the same one that is heard on shortwave WWV. I don't know how long it will let you listen before it cuts you off, I think it is about 3 or 4 minutes, but you could record this and use it as a counter. After I listen for a while, I get pretty good at being able to count it myself. Thanks to Ed Potter, he stated in one of the Playback issues that the most accurate way he had found to count seconds was to say 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi, and so on. Hey, I warned you that this is a work around until you can do better.
