I have an old one here called Ariadne GPS which allows you to set Poi's and then it gives you distance and compass bearing - clock face directions to the chosen poi. Still seems quite reliable, don't know why I didn't use it more or lately since I walk water courses as much as public highways. Think it good for on-water as well as off-road. Sailing/canoeing is popular too.
