You can also just touch the right edge of the screen while in your contacts and use the section index.

It works, as far as I know, the same way it worked when first introduced and on every phone I have used. First, go to the top of the screen, swipe right till you hear, "section index". flick down until you hear the letter of the alphabet you want, double tap on it and you are taken to the header for that letter. Swipe right to the contact. I have no issues whatsoever with this feature.
