Jen, I joined my first two Teams groups today. While it was on my laptop, the concept my help. In one case, a coworker had added me to a teams group she created and I got an email with a note to open in Teams. In the other case, I think I clicked on a provided link that allowed me to opt into a public Teams group at our company. So, I suspect that the message you are getting is related to you needing to be invited to join a particular group someone has created. Until I joined these groups, my view in Teams was empty.
