I have struggled with this problem and had some luck with saying Siri, Send text message to 919-xxxxxxx, and mostly it gets there to my friend with an Android.
I have another friend who had an iPhone, never could work with the thing, got some trade off the thing and bought a Kyocera Dura. So I say, Siri send to friend's iPhone, and away it goes! Bigger than life! She gets it.
