The easiest way to start a search in the app store is to double tap and hold on the app store icon, from the context menu which pops up select "Search" which is the first item, this takes you directly to the search tab and puts focus in the search box. After you type your search word or term, make sure to tap the "Search" button on the bottom right of the keyboard, you will get suggestions as you type, but the best results I often find you get after your tap the search biutton.
