Which adapter is that that requires no power? And, have you tried using Safari to go to the NLS BARD site and downloading a book? You may even be able to save it directly to the SD card with that adapter. If it downloads as a zip file, you may have to unzip it into its own folder on the SD card, but I think that can be done with Safari as well. I'd really like to know which phone and which adapter you are using. The one I bought has to be plugged into power unless you are using an iPad.
