It's to drive a remote computer, remote desktop is the desktop on that computer, the one you try to connect to with this software, which as the nearest interface, is the client. Telnet is an old Unix terminal access system, that's all there was before DOS and the Personal computer. Linux still have Telnet server features, so the more likely to be able to dribe it's desktop remotely, from your iPhone or whatever.
