Goes to show how quick one forgets. I think the "Automatic Updates" button might be new in iOS 14 and that before this it was under "Customize". Tammy might get better suggestions if she included the iOS version she has, is it 13 or is she still on iOS 12?

Double tapping on that gives, two options, automatically download, and automatically install. You can turn either or both off. Now, this may be new in 14, so you possibly don’t see that. I don’t have a device running 13.7 to check. Try using the search feature at the top of Settings, and enter update and see what comes up.
