I have always wondered what it is doing when it takes much longer to prepare the update than it took to download it, sometimes longer than it takes to install it. This is only my speculation, but I will bet that what it initially downloads is an installer, which then goes out to get the actual files to install. All that preparing is its gathering together the files to install. Again, this is my speculation, I don't really know.
