All iPhones can be locked, with or without a passcode or face ID. Locking just means putting it to sleep, or allowing the autolock to take affect
Just tap the power button once, and it is locked. You simply do the one finger slide up from the bottom to the first vibration to unlock any phone without a home button. Why she cannot do that the same as on her XR, seems odd. not using a passcode or Face ID just means anyone can use the phone and reset it, etc. .
