Its very easy. First, go to some place with a lot of light say your kitchen. Now, put your bill down on say your kitchen table. I always make sure the space is pretty open with not a lot of stuff around my bill. Now, once you have your bill on the table, hold your phone above the bill about maybe 6 inches or so, and slowly start to lower your iPhone down towards your bill. Your iPhone will speak the denomination of your bill. Good luck. It does work quite well.
