Hi Mary,

Has he tried going into his Apple ID settings, go into iCloud, go into storage, 
then iCloudbackups and delete what he does have and try it again? That  
happened to me when I tried to back up after down-grading iOS. Not sure if this 
will help, but it may be worth a try.
