Yes, it is a problem especially with longer threads. I don't keep that many messages in one thread, but if a thread happens to have 15 or 20 messages, I can experience that, so what I do is before opening the thread, flick up with one finger to expand thread. Then, it lists them out separately so it is like not having threading on until you go back to the top of the group and fllick up to collapse thread and double tap. HTH,
