Actually Mike, QuickNav is off when you are entering text, but note that in the VoiceOver Typing Feedback settings there are separate settings for software and hardware keyboards. Make sure the Hardware keyboard is set the way you want it. QuickNav is short for Quick Navigation. That has to be on when you are trying to navigate. Like using control+up arrow to jump to the top left of the screen. But when you go into a text field and want to type if QuickNav is on, VoiceOver will try to interpret your keystrokes as navigation commands. Since Apple stopped having VoiceOver speak "QuickNav On or QuickNav off" you only have the rising and lowering tones, which are not so distinct as the speech would be.
