Hello all: I believe that the hard plastic shells referenced in the original message are just packing materials that are meant to protect the ear pads during shipping. They should be removed and discarded. Thus, the proper Airpods Max setup consists of the aluminum earcups to which the ear pads are attached; nothing additional goes over the ear pads. In other words, when wearing the headphones, the soft foam of the ear cushions should be in contact with your head. I hope that this clarifies the situation. Regards, Robert Hooper, Esq.
