First, yes, you got the group address correct. Everyone sees the message because when you hit reply, it is replying to the group, because you received the message from the group; not from an individual. That is why groups that use a different list service have a reply to sender option at the bottom of the messages to make it easier to reply off list to someone directly; but those services may have a cost; I'm not sure.
If you can get into the From section of the email you wish to reply to a person from; you can copy their direct email list from there and replace the group address in the to field.
