Vicki, You don't mention whether you pressed the volume up or volume down button at the same time as the power button. When I press either volume button simultaneously with the power button on my iPhone SE 2020, I get a screen containing a slide to power off control at the top, an emergency SOS button in the middle and a cancel button at the bottom. If I execute the cancel button, I have to enter my passcode as if I had powered off.
I have no clue whether the first generation SE behaves similarly but you could either Google it or call Apple Accessibility as Richard suggested.
