The OS on your phone makes no difference, the S1 controller works fine on the latest version of iOS, but unless you have older hardware such as a Connect, Connect Amp, original Play 5 etc. there is no reason to use the S1 controller. There are also third party Sonos remotes available in the App Store, I personally don't see a point in using them, but one of them is SonoPhone which according to the description works with all Sonos products and can be used even on an iPhone 4S or old iPod Touch, but this is not a free app. There is also an app called Lyd which is a Sonos Controller for the Apple Watch, it is also not free. Lastly I also just saw an app called Sonos Automation which offers SIRI shortcuts for Sonos. One interesting point the developer makes is that unlike with the actual Sonos Controller where you have to be on the same WiFi network to connect and control your system, his SIRI shortcuts work from anywhere and yu can ask SIRI to play something even if you are not at home.
