Hi, In the iTunes music folder is a folder called Automatically Add to iTunes. Your friend should copy any music he wants to add to his iTunes library to that folder.
You can check or uncheck a song by right-clicking (pressing the context key or Shift-F10 in Windows or VO-Shift-M on a Mac) and choosing to check. Also, there's a check box beside each track which is accessible on the Mac; I don't know about Windows. There are programs that can attempt to identify untagged tracks, but I don't know any by name. google might help there.
