Hi.
You can do this by going into settings/ mail, contacts calendars, and
then under your account, there is an option called fetch data. You can
set it to check for new every 10 minutes, 30 or 60. not sure if there
are other times you can sschedule it. Either way, the phone will ding
and vibrate once you have new mail, which it will automatically check
for based on this setting. However, just know that the more often you
tell the phone to fetch data, the more drain it will be on your
battery.
