Neal, I have to share with you what my wife who currently has an ipad 2 said when she got her hands on my ipad Mini.
First she of course said it was "cute". Then she said you need to swap with me and take my Ipad 2 instead of this one because it's more manly and size matters. (lol) It was priceless. I personally can quite comfortably and easily hold the iPad Mini in portrait rotation, with the device between my thumb on one side and four remaining fingers the other side. It should be noted that this is how Phil Schillinger, Apple's product chap, demonstrated it during the press conference introducing iPad Mini. iBooks is another good case for the iPad, good point well made. The iPad Mini also has, and I'm not quite sure how important this is, but, also has stereo speakers for use when in portrait orientation, of course, would have made more sense in landscape, but, never mind. I think my wife best summed up the iPad Mini with the following comment. We currently own two iPad's, both 3rd generation, bought in March. I was thinking of getting a third new one this time, as our children use them a lot too. When I showed her the Mini her response was, oh, yes, that looks nice, I assume I'll be getting one as well? This from a none tech embracing sort, said it all to me.
