You definitely won't damage your device by charging it with an older USB A
lightning charger. The same goes for power banks which use USB A ports.
It's all absolutely safe to use. The newer adaptors and cables simply offer
significantly greater speed delivered safely. Apple can vouch for its own
adaptors so they may offer a greater degree of safety. They have a
certification called MFI for third party accessories. If a power bank or
cable has this certification, Apple has vouched them safe to use with their
iPhones or iPads.
It's really not all about greed on Apple's part. They genuinely feel they
offer a better charging system. More likely, that it was a better system
until fairly recently. At this point though, similar to the fate of the
technically superior Betamax video tapes, the USB C standard has simply
gained market dominance. I think Apple will have to bow to the inevidable
and give up on Lightning charging withing perhaps the next three iterations
of iPhone at the longest.
I have one USB C adaptor and USB C to Lightning cable. They're at my desk
where I think it most likely that I'll need speedy charging. I have my
older Lightning chargers and cables everywhere else. Although I very much
like Magsafe, I can't use it with the case I picked. The Apple Magsafe
clear cases really don't give me confidence that they offer much protection
at all. In the end, my desire for actual protection won out and I went with
a Supcase Unicorn Beetle case for my new iPhone 13. I have a third party
wireless charging pad which I still find convenient if somewhat more fidly
to get the iPhone in the right position. It is able to charge through the
protective case allowing me to use my Lightning port for earpods.
