I think it is important to know that there is 2 models of the Apple Watch. There is the Wi-Fi version, and the Cellular version.
Other than keeping time and maybe for a couple of other things, the Wi-Fi version will not do anything else while you are out and away from your phone. With the Cellular version, you will receive notifications, can make and receive calls and text messages, plus other things while you are away from your phone. But know, that the Cellular version cost more, and you will have to activate the cellular part with your phone carrier which will increase your cell phone bill around $15 a month.
