Sorry, but you’re right. In my mind there are two different problems here. The first is when someone uses an existing thread to start a whole new topic. This is hijacking a thread even if the subject line is changed.
The second is when a topic starts drifting away from the original message on the thread but there is no abrupt change in topic. Maybe someone asks about the pros and cons of IOS over Android and someone points out that you can still use an SD card on some Android phones. This prompts someone to ask about which SD cards are the best to use in their phone, so now we’re talking about SD cards and not phones any more. This is harder to say that someone hijacked the thread, or even whether a new thread should be spun off at all since some of the information may be lost in an abrupt transition. IMHO, this is when it makes sense to start changing the subject line, although it may also be unclear when this is necessary.
