If a GPS app is not running in the background, it will not use battery. If it is running in the background, it will use Cellular data; though not a huge amount, but you probably should be aware that you will be using cellular data while traveling with a GPS app active.
You could do a test, check your cellular data usage under settings cellular. Make note of it. Then, use a GPS app when outside on Cellular, away from Wi-Fi. After however much time you want to do that, take the GPS ap out of the app switcher. Then, check the cellular data usage again. Depending on your carrier, that may update quickly, or you may have to wait a while to see the usage reflected. But this can give you at least an idea of how much data it takes.
